What is Green Tea
Green tea is made from the unfermented leaves, buds and tender stems of the Camellia sinensis plant. It literally means “unfermented tea”, distinguished from black tea and oolong tea by its production process that skips fermentation. The fresh tea leaves are quickly heated—either by pan-frying or steaming—to deactivate enzymes, preventing oxidation and preserving the leaves’ natural green hue and active ingredients. After heating, the leaves are rolled, shaped and dried to form the finished green tea products we commonly see.
Benefits
Green tea is a nutrient-dense beverage packed with essential compounds for human health. Beyond containing small amounts of vitamins (like vitamin C and B vitamins) and minerals (such as potassium and manganese), it is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These antioxidants are linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and certain cancers, as well as improved blood sugar control, lowered blood pressure, and anti-aging effects.
Advantages
When brewing traditional green tea, the beneficial components in the leaves are extracted into hot water, and the used leaves are usually discarded afterward. However, green tea’s brewing process is flexible and accessible—you only need to steep the dried leaves in 80–85℃ hot water for 1–3 minutes, which is simple to operate at home. Compared to fermented teas, its lighter, fresher flavor with a hint of umami caters to a wide range of tastes, and it retains higher levels of heat-sensitive nutrients thanks to the non-fermentation process.
Application
Daily consumption: Green tea is most commonly enjoyed as a hot beverage, and can also be made into iced tea for a refreshing summer drink.Food industry: It is used as a natural flavoring and coloring agent in various foods and drinks, such as green tea cookies, mooncakes, yogurt, smoothies, and even savory dishes like green tea-infused rice.Health and skincare field: Green tea extracts are added to skincare products (like toners and masks) for their antioxidant and soothing properties, and are also included in dietary supplements to support overall wellness.
